Title: Rock Docs and Reviving the Energy of the '80s: A Journey through Music

Hey there, fellow music enthusiasts! I'm Lauren Giglio, the content creator at Homegig, and today, I want to take you on a musical journey that's been close to my heart. Being a music and entertainment fan  has always been a part of my DNA, and it all started when my mom and dad introduced me to the magical world of music at an early age.

My childhood was filled with the sounds of vinyl records and the excitement of unwrapping those new records we got for Christmas, our birthday or with our own babysitting money. Our favorites included Elton John, The Partridge Family, and eventually Queen thanks to my sister Jeanne! But the real treat was when they took us to theater performances, Broadway shows, and allowed us to attend rock concerts. Fast forward to today, and I find myself addicted to rock documentaries, reliving the glory days of iconic bands and artists.

One recent cinematic gem that captivated me was the Talking Heads' "Stop Making Sense" movie, directed by the legendary Jonathan Demme, screened at the MV Film Center. Revisiting this masterpiece was a trip down memory lane to the early '80s, a time when music was a pulsating force of creativity and expression. What struck me the most was the sheer amount of energy that was poured into each of those shows on tour. I can only imagine how exhausting it must have been for the band members, yet they left it all on the stage, giving their audience an unforgettable experience.

David Byrne's iconic performance is a testament to his innovative artistry and stage presence. This concert film captures Byrne's charismatic energy as the frontman of the Talking Heads during their 1983 tour. With each song, Byrne's magnetic persona and unique vocal style shine through, making it a transcendent experience for music enthusiasts. "Stop Making Sense" is not merely a concert film; it's a showcase of David Byrne's brilliance as a performer and a reminder of the band's enduring impact on the music world.

Speaking of the Talking Heads, I can't help but sing praises for Tina Weymouth. She's an incredible bass player who added a unique groove to the band's music. Her presence on stage is magnetic, and she's a testament to the talent that graced the music scene during that era. The documentary includes a show break to introduce The Tom Tom Club- a musical side project that was formed by drummer Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth, both of whom were founding members of the Talking Heads.

But my musical journey doesn't stop there. I recently delved into the latest U2 concert experience at the Sphere in Las Vegas, and let me tell you, it's now firmly on my bucket list. The Sphere takes entertainment to a whole different level, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in live music. It's a testament to how technology can enhance the concert experience, immersing the audience in a sensory overload of visuals and sounds.

As I continue my exploration of music, I'm reminded of the power it holds to transport us through time and space. Whether it's revisiting the classics of the '80s or embracing the cutting-edge innovations of today, music remains a source of inspiration and joy.

So here's to the rock docs that let us relive the past, the legendary bands that defined an era, and the future of music that continues to push the boundaries of entertainment. Keep rocking on, my friends!

Until next time,

Lauren Giglio

Island style

🌺🎶 Last night at the PA club, we experienced an uplifting performance by none other than the Grammy-Award-winning Hawaiian legend, John Cruz! 🎤✨

In an intimate setting, we were privileged to witness John Cruz truly in his element – performing live in a premier listening room where you could see, hear, and feel every note. It was a night filled with the spirit of "Island Style," as he shared the Hawaiian way of life, echoing the seminal words of his timeless hit song.

John took us on a musical journey "from the mountain to the ocean," and along the way, he talked story about his Hawaiian heritage, his beloved family, and his son Zane. The crowd felt like an extended family, sharing in his stories and songs that touched the heart and soul.

His setlist was a beautiful blend of songs, including a poignant rendition of Van Morrison's "The Water," which carried even more weight in light of the recent Maui fires, referencing the lack of this precious resource. He wove his own masterpieces into the night, with "One of These Days" being a particular highlight. And of course, he paid homage to the great Bob Marley, leaving the audience swaying to the rhythms of reggae.

What truly stood out was John Cruz's energy and the power of his voice, which told stories through each song. But this show was more than just music; it was a fundraiser for the Maui fires. John, together with his family, is generously donating their land and resources to adolescents in need of a holistic environment and wellness. The show collected funds for the @halepule John's foundation, ensuring that the spirit of aloha continues to flourish in times of adversity.

As John Cruz serenaded us with his melodies and shared his heartfelt stories, we were reminded of the beauty of Hawaiian culture, family bonds, and the importance of giving back. Last night was not just a concert; it was an experience that left our hearts full and our spirits uplifted. 🌴🌟#JohnCruz #IslandStyle #MauiFires #Fundraiser #HalePuleFoundation

Words To Treasure: Comes the Dawn by Veronica A. Shoffstall *Lauren Giglio

I re-discovered some words I treasure. It was hidden among the multitude of notes, notices, reminders and other bits of paper collected in a box.

The poem first showed up in my life more than ten years ago. Since then, it seems to always come at a timely moment. Sent to me recently by my good friend and mentor Dorothy Connolly.

Having found it again, I did a little research to find out who the author was. Veronica A. Shoffstall is the most accredited author. However it may have originally been written in Spanish by Jorge Luis Borges, an author from Argentina. There is also someone called Judith Evans who claims to be the author, never had it copyrighted and was quite happy for it to be published under  ‘Author Unknown.’ Unsurprisingly, the poem goes by various names: ‘Comes the Dawn’, ‘After a while’ and ‘You Learn.’

These words touched me deeply when I first found them and still touches me now. Every now and then I come back to this poem. It's like a little reminder. I hope you enjoy them too.

After a while you learn the subtle differenceBetween holding a hand and chaining a soul. And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning. And company isn’t security. You learn that kisses aren’t contracts. And presents aren’t promises, And you begin to accept your defeats With your head up and your eyes open With the grace of a woman, not the grief of a child. And you learn to build all your roads on today, Because tomorrow’s ground is too uncertain for plans,And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. After a while you learn That even sunshine burns if you get too much or stand too long in one place. So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure…That you really are strong, And you really do have worth. You learn that with every good-bye comes the dawn.

JOE MALONE LONDON MASTERCLASS
Last week I was invited to a Joe Malone London MasterClass, a virtual event to experience their new Blossoms collection.

Beautifully wrapped and bagged with Joe Malone luxurious boxes, tissue and ribbons, Fragrance samples, paintbrush, a watercolor pallet and paper arrived in advance with a bonus travel candle! I’m a sucker for presentation, and Joe Malone London spares no expense in the luxury experience. The new scents paired with a tropical background, and relaxing brush strokes was such a great way to end the week and begin the weekend!
Lisa Miller, @handwrittenaloha an artist from Hawaii, shared her Aloha Friday spirit and taught  us how to create our own watercolor artwork, taking inspiration from the colorful new spring collection featuring Joe Malone’s Blossoms Yellow Hibiscus.

it’s always exciting to have a new spring fragrance especially coming out of a year in quarantine! Thanks Joe Malone and Wendy for including me in this fabulous event!
